Setup Guide

1

Create your free account

Go to bitwarden.com, click “Get Started Free,” enter your email, and create a strong master password. Write it down and store it somewhere safe — this is the only password you'll ever need to remember again.

Step 2 — Bitwarden download page showing all platform options
3

Install the browser extension

This is the most important step. The extension auto-fills your saved passwords on every website you visit, so you'll actually use it day to day.

Step 3 — Bitwarden browser extension icon pinned to the toolbar
4

Import your existing passwords

If you already have passwords saved in Chrome, Safari, or Firefox, export them first from your browser, then import the CSV file into Bitwarden.

  • Go to Bitwarden web vault > Tools > Import
  • Export your existing passwords from your browser first
  • Select your browser's format and upload the CSV
Step 4 — Bitwarden web vault Tools > Import screen
5

Enable two-factor authentication on Bitwarden itself

Protect your vault with an extra layer of security by turning on two-step login using an authenticator app.

  • Go to Account Settings > Security > Two-step Login
  • Enable Authenticator App
  • Download Authy first if you don't already have an authenticator app
Step 5 — Account Settings > Security > Two-step Login screen
6

Set up the mobile app

Log in on your phone and enable biometrics (Face ID or fingerprint) so you can unlock your vault quickly without typing your master password every time.

Step 6 — Bitwarden mobile app biometric unlock prompt
7

Share a family vault

Use Organizations (free for 2 users) or upgrade to the Families plan ($40/yr for 6 users) to securely share WiFi passwords, insurance logins, and streaming accounts with your household.

Step 7 — Bitwarden Organizations family vault sharing screen
8

Test it

Lock the extension, visit a site you've saved a password for, click the Bitwarden icon, and confirm it auto-fills your credentials correctly.

Step 8 — Bitwarden extension auto-filling a login form

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bitwarden safe?
Yes — it's open source, independently audited, and built on a zero-knowledge architecture, meaning even Bitwarden can't see your passwords.
What if I forget my master password?
Bitwarden cannot recover it for you. Write it down and store it somewhere physical, like a safe or a locked drawer.
Can I use it on multiple devices?
Yes — the free plan includes unlimited devices.
What's the difference between free and paid?
Free is already excellent for most people. Paid adds 2FA hardware key support, Bitwarden Authenticator, and encrypted file attachments.
Is it better than Chrome's built-in password manager?
Yes — Bitwarden works across every browser and device, offers stronger security, and lets you share logins with family.
